Season 1 at a Glance
The debut season premiered January 20, 2014, on CTV, and concluded April 28, 2014, running 15 episodes. CTV ordered the series in June 2013, with open casting call auditions held that August and filming taking place from early September to late November 2013. Fifty home cooks from across Canada competed for a spot, needing at least two “yes” votes from the three judges to earn a white apron and advance.
Who Won MasterChef Canada Season 1?
Eric Chong, a 21-year-old Chinese-Canadian chemical engineering graduate from McMaster University, living in Oakville, Ontario, was crowned the winner, becoming Canada’s first-ever MasterChef and taking home the trophy and $100,000 grand prize. At 21, he was the youngest winner in the show’s history at the time — a record he’d hold until 19-year-old Beccy Stables broke it in Season 5. In the finale’s decisive dessert round, Chong’s Asian-inspired banana split — featuring green tea and red bean ice creams and banana tempura — won over the judges after the appetizer and entrée rounds had left the two finalists tied. “It’s an absolute honour and thrill to be named Canada’s first MasterChef,” Chong said afterward. “I have succeeded in showing my family, and myself, that I can make a career out of my passion for cooking, and I look forward to pursuing my dream even further.” After the show, Chong left engineering entirely and trained under judge Alvin Leung in Hong Kong, later opening a restaurant together with him — R&D (Rebel & Demon) — in Toronto’s Spadina neighbourhood in March 2015.
Runner-Up
Marida Mohammed, a stay-at-home mom from Toronto, finished as runner-up after a genuinely close three-course finale battle. Her appetizer — a callaloo and pumpkin soup with pig tails — won the first round outright, before Chong’s lobster with homemade noodles evened the score in the entrée round, setting up a decisive dessert showdown that ultimately went his way.
Prize Money
The winner took home CAD $100,000 in cash, along with the MasterChef Canada trophy and title — the grand prize structure that would remain standard across every subsequent season.
